What Do All Those Numbers on My Lens Prescription Mean?

It may look incomprehensible, but in reality, those numbers are easily decipherable. Basically, your eye doctor has written a series of numbers indicating the type and extent of your vision problem. For example, the spherical error (SPH) on your glasses prescription refers to how much correction you need if you are farsighted or nearsighted. If you have astigmatism, you’ll have a cylinder number indicating how much lens power you need to correct blurry, distorted vision.

For people who need reading or multifocal correction, they’ll have an ADD (additive power) number scribbled on their prescription. And just for clarity, those “+” or “-” signs you see scattered around those numbers just tell our eyeglass prescription interpreters how much correction is needed.

Ordering online prescription glasses also requires your pupillary distance number, or the distance between the pupils. We need this information to determine where your lenses need to be placed in the frames you select. Check out EyeBuyDirect's guide for how to read your prescription.

Don’t Forget to Add Prism Correction to Your Orders

When you’re entering information about your online prescription glasses, just click “add prism” and we will make sure your lens contains prism correction. Sometimes, images seen by one eye are not in line with images seen by the other eye. This means you may see two images instead of one, clear image. Lenses enhanced by prism correction ensure images remain in binocular sync so that everything you see is crystal-clear. Prescriptions specifying prism correction will also include a base number describing displacement direction.
